There were moments so we’ll written I thought the book had taken a turn closer towards a 4 star, but then it would dive back into something trite or just too staged or pat. The beginning had me gritting my teeth. The characters and their set up are just horrible - cliches and use of things like sex in a way that just didn’t work. Those moments made me feel I was reading a first time published novelist who would only get better. Imagine my surprise that this was book two!
Unlike other readers, I didn’t think this went down a well worn path. As the author himself says, he used some tropes (knock at the door, unknown hazard/danger), but in great ways.
