I love WWII stories. This Story was one of the best I’ve read. A tale of bravery, strength, and love truly warmed my heart. With a title like “Our Darkest Night” you best believe you’ll need a box of tissues with you. I highly recommend the audio book for the Italian accents.

5/5 I cant express how much raw emotion was in Our Darkest Night, but I appreciate every page. Im not usually reading many books involving history and Ill never know what it was like for anyone going through this, but my heart aches knowing this was the world at one time. Antonina, while fictional bore the story of many other Jewish females and I felt every one of her emotions. I was a total mess at most parts of this book wether it be unbearable happiness or utter despair. Im so glad that I took the time to really enjoy every page.

"She was left with the lingering memory that once, not so very long ago, and not so very far away, she had been loved." A paean to life & the power of hope. Engrossing story. Lyrical writing. Unforgettable.

A sweet "beach romance", except it takes place during WWII in Italy. Some things just didn't make enough sense to me... little (or big!) chick flick plot holes that you overlook for chick lit but that seem more glaring for a romance set during the holocaust with a Jewish main character sent to a concentration camp. I don't know...I enjoyed it and the characters, but it just read more like a chick lit, with that kind of substance, than a WWII novel, and the horrifying bits therefore seemed out of place even though they were appropriate for the setting.

I won this book through a Goodreads Giveaway and was extremely happy that I did!! I was looking forward to reading a book of WW2 based in Italy, and it did not disappoint!!

This is a story of a young woman in Venice and the sacrifices and struggles she must endure for security and shelter during the war. This is my first novel by Jennifer Robson but will not be my last. I found it a little slow to start, but once it got going, I couldn't put it down!

Thank-you to William Morrow for the advance copy!

I haven't read a romantic historical fiction in a while, and liked the opportunity to read it. Set against the harrowing years of WWII in Italy, Nina is forced to go into hiding with a gentile family in the countryside, passing as the eldest son's new wife. Being forced to hide her jewish identity and do hard labour for the first time introduces the central theme of the book, female resilience.

Most of the relationships/characters lacked development throughout, and the circumstances of the era lead the novel and have the strongest emotions linked to them. Rosa and Nina are the eldest women at the farm who have the largest change in relationship from frosty to sisterly. While most play their function as enemy or friend.

It is important to understand the complete scope of WWII, and this novel seemed well researched and brought to light the Italian perspective, which I was less familiar with.

Really liking this author!!! This book was so good. I loved the romance. The events of WW2 made me so mad. The author does such a great job of painting the picture that I thought I was there. All throughout she reminded us of believing in hope, miracles and that some things are meant to be. If we can remember to trust in the higher being or powers beyond ourselves, anything is possible.
