'The Fairy Universe' by Olivier Ledroit, Larent Souille, and Olivier Souille is an imaginative art book filled with strange creatures.

In this darkly comical book, you will meet many creatures that you hopefully will never meet in the woods. There is garishness and beauty to be seen here. The weird fortunes of the creatures as well as those who cross their paths are written here, perhaps as a warning.

There is no narrative here, but the magic of the text and the beauty of the art is worth a visit if you are a fan of fantasy and especially fairies.

The Fairy Universe is a wonderfully diverse encyclopedia of the Fae tied together by short vignette text, but it's the fantasy art that is the main attraction. Due out 8th June 2022 and distributed in North America by Diamond Comics, it's 136 pages and is available in hardcover and ebook/comiXology formats.

This is a wide ranging collection from the works of Olivier Ledroit and represents different media types from pen and ink to watercolor. The pieces are diverse and many are compelling. The formatting reminds me quite a lot of "The art of...(Frazetta, Oliver Frey, Whelan, etc)" collections from the past.

This is a nice collection for fantasy art enthusiasts and a good resource for inspiration. The text was presumably originally published in French and is capably translated in this English language edition by Fabrice Sapolsky. Much of the art is haunting and atmospheric and not just a little bit creepy. It reminds me in some ways of the deliciously scary Grimm's Fairy Tales illustrated by Arthur Rackham which terrified me as a small child. There is some small amount of nudity included in the works in this edition.

Four stars. Quite beautifully done.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

It's a fabulous book, one of those book you want in paper as the images and the graphics are wonderful and you must see them at best.

Cannot give feedback. File will not download/open.

Attempted troubleshooting of deleting & redownloading the main Netgalley program for viewing/reading/reviewing books on the PC, still would not open The Fairy Universe while it still opened other similar Netgalley download files. Attempt three downloads of The Fairy Universe file but none of them open & I received an error (Unload to download - Error getting License. License Server Communication Problem: E_ACT_NOT_READY).

I'll be looking for a copy once it's published.

I enjoyed this book as it gave description of the different fairies and creatures that appear in The Fairy Universe. Each fairy and creature have about them and a suggested way of interacting with them, when they are most active, etc. The drawing in this book are beautiful and detail which captured my interest from the very first picture on the cover. The use of both black and white pictures as well as colored drawings really brings the readers attention to the details of each drawing. The drawings that are entirelly in black and white use shading to bring the image to life. The font that the creatures names are in also fit the book as they are stand out but are not too over stimulating that it distracts the readers. Anyone who is interested in mythical creatures would enjoy reading this book.

I look forward to purchasing this book to my book collection. Many thanks to the aurthor, publisher, and NetGallery for an advanced copy for an honest review.

This is a beautiful art/informative book for fans of the Fae or that general universe of mythical creatures. Not only is it FILLED with beautiful and fun artwork but the small snippets of story and descriptions of the different creatures are very interesting. I thought I knew a lot of different folklore related creatures but there were tons in here I'd never even heard of. A great read!

Gorgeous illustrations and a fun variety of fairies! My only issue is it was hard to read some of the text, at least in the e-ARC I got from NetGalley.

The Fairy Universe is a spectacular treat. The art is intricate, dramatic, and often downright stunning, moving seamlessly from colorful double page spreads to pencil drawings and back again. The care taken in each decision about design and layout is easy to see, and the attention to detail pays off. The evocative art and few sentences of description for each fairy create the illusion of rich and detailed stories despite their "simple" elements.

My one disappointment is in the lack of representation. The female fairies in particular have very little variety in body shape and white skin tones. The art is beautiful, but it is not diverse.
There is also female nudity for those who would prefer to avoid it.

I'm very excited to page through a physical copy of this book. I can only imagine how much more wonderful the full-size art will be when compared to the images on my tiny phone screen!

Thank you to NetGalley and Diamond Book Distributors for a digital ARC in exchange for an honest review.
