I really liked this book, and I'm surprised I've never heard of Jonathan Carroll before. I definitely plan on reading more of his work.

Recommended on the shelf at Powells. Super enjoyable read. The ending feels a little rushed, but totally forgivable for a first novel. Excited to keep reading Jonathon Carroll's stuff.
This book is delightfully Hitchcockian. It starts as just a normal story of a bored man deciding to write an autobiography of his favorite author. Some of the facts about the author don't quite add up, and when he goes to Galen, Missouri, the author's home town, the town and its inhabitants seem creepily normal... and then things gradually get very strange. Nothing is revealed until very late in the book, so even though the events of the book are very mundane, the suspense makes this a page-turner.
Brilliant.
For most of the book, I had no idea what I was reading. Mystery? Fantasy? Story telling? I did know that I was hooked. I started this book over breakfast Friday morning and had to stop so as not to miss my train. Read it on the train to work, and the train home. Read it once I was home, and woke up to finish it.
Excellent characters, great story, and the perfect amount of reality. I'm definitely getting more books from [a:Jonathan Carroll|23704|Jonathan Carroll|http://photo.goodreads.com/authors/1222900262p2/23704.jpg].

The Land of Laughs was an amazing, interesting and captivating book. I couldn“t put it down, once I started reading it.
I really enjoyed the characters, the plot and the magic Jonathan Carroll created.
Loved it.

Wow - this was such a surprise and just amazing. The story was so off the wall, so out there but so amazing. The writing was amazing, the characters were amazing and yes I am just raving.
One of my favourite lines in the book was "The moon was a werewolf's delight - full, gravel white - and seemed half a mile away".
It has been a long time since I came across a book that kept drawing me back to it, I wanted to find out about the characters and I did not care that they were likeable or not. I was so utterly drawn into this world.
A really great book. Will look to read more Carroll's works.

My first Jonathan Carroll book. Won't be my last. Fun and odd.
