Honestly this book did not grip me at all. It is very slow - especially at the beginning - and the storyline just isn’t very interesting. It’s very centred around the main character’s thoughts. I wouldn’t recommend this book.

If you haven't read the synopsis of this book, don't! For the copy I picked up, this was an example case of badly-written back-cover synopsis which ruined the reading experience.
The book itself was okay. It was supposed to be a dark, creepy suspense from the point of view of a broken man, told in inner monologues not too different to [b:Crime and Punishment|7144|Crime and Punishment|Fyodor Dostoyevsky|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1382846449l/7144._SY75_.jpg|3393917]. While the synopsis misled me to believe this was a thriller (and hence disappointed me) as opposed to slow suspense, some of the scenes did have a haunting quality that I really enjoyed.
The first half of the book was 2 stars from me (again, because the synopsis set a different expectation), while the second half (after I went passed the synopsis spoiler) was 3 stars. Overall, the book was just a moment-in-time glimpse at Riktor's life - it wasn't meant to give readers any deep explanation on his entire life.
All in all, 2.5 stars.

H said I would love this one.
It was great - no whodunnit but a splendid page turner nonetheless . Very clever construction and you'd never guess it was a x-lation from Scandinavian. Right inside the man's head and you feel so sorry for a serial murderer and torturer.
I'd take another Fossum any time
