This book should be longer. It's kind of rushed and it feels a bit hollow. If the book was more full and had more substance in it would have been better. I like that there was racism presented even if they made me so mad because non-POC readers can better understand what we have to go through. It's so gross and unfair. Also, Emily never felt bad or apologized for making fun of Soojin's food. I wished they didn't just brush that off after Amina thought Emily was okay. Emily is still annoying. I hope the next book is much better.
Before reading:
I don't really remember a lot about the book but I remember it was not as good as I expected haha
I'm going to read it again soon :D

(and she was enjoying Asian food a lot at the end! ugh.)Spoiler
I'm glad Soojin kept her name. Susan is such an adult-sounding name and it doesn't match Soojin too. Before reading:

My 10-year-old and I really enjoyed reading this together. Amina has always felt like she stuck out a bit, but when her best friend Soojin decides to change her name to celebrate becoming a citizen, she feels more on the outside than ever. In the meantime, her Uncle visits from Pakistan, and it seems to Amina that he disapproves of anything American, like trick or treating, and he doesn't believe that she should spend her time singing and playing music. When Amina's mosque is defaced by vandals, readers get a look at the hurt that hateful acts causes to the people impacted, as well as an inspiring look at how a community can come together in love to counter hate. There's a lot going on in this middle grade read, but the threads move together easily, and the story was an enjoyable way to open some important conversations with my daughter.

amina reminds me a lot of my younger self struggling with the community and friends and all sorts of changes. while her immaturity is annoying, i look at it fondly as it is so accurate.
