The world building and the plot really lured me in and kept me going throughout the book. I found I was more interested in how the world works and the political conversations than the main character, which is kinda sad.

Not gonna lie, she’s the absolute worst! The author really tried to emphasize how “quirky” she was and how much she wasn’t “like other girls”. It’s pretty gross. And what’s worse is that she doesn’t really develop.... like at all. She was annoying from start to finish. In the end, I preferred the “antagonists” over her.

Even though she annoys me to no end, I will most likely read the rest of the series. Wish me luck!

I really enjoyed this book! It was sometimes hard to see where it was going but I think it just was trying to set up the future books

very whimsical and i could just envision this story being adapted as an animated film, almost something ghibli-like (
especially the scene where ophelia leaves with thorn and her family waves her off in the rain
). the way the characters were sometimes described just added to this whimsy and animation-like quality, as they were described with very exaggerated features, something you would see in an animated film or cartoon. i quite liked the main character, ophelia, she was a bit different from the typical "girl boss" main character we often see in fantasy and i found that quite refreshing and made me want to root for her! as for thorn,
i was warming up to him and then the ending made me feel so bad for ophelia! it seems no one is in her corner apart from us, the readers and maybe fox and her mechanic friend (i forget her name)
. i quite liked that, even though she is quite adventurous, she never lost her ophelia-ness. a solid fantasy novel and i immediately need to read the sequel after that ending!

For the first 100 pages or so I found this book a bit boring, then things got more intriguing. I personally think that the worldbuilding is the most interesting thing of this first book butI want to know how this story continues. In the end, it's a good book.

a bit slow for my taste but the plot is interesting enough to make me wanna pick up another 500 page book haha
i actually really like the main character which surprised me because i usually struggle with quiet characters but she's great, she's quiet but she has strong opinions, I like that
