holy shit. this is a banger of a debut novel. truly a modern folktale, Nethercott manages to convey an ancientness in her story without it feeling old. she’s found the perfect blend of lighthearted storytelling peppered with dark, grim imagery to remind us of the true foundations of this novel and the very real suffering the Jewish people have faced over time. i cannot recommend this book highly enough.

Unique telling of the Baba Yaga story. Likable interesting characters.

“for as long as it is remembered and told, the story remains.”

beautiful story that asserts itself as a folktale and emphasizes the power that memory and storytelling both hold. it’s always a treat to get a story rooted in jewish lore, and this one in particular doesn’t shy away from the dark histories that led to brighter worlds.
