Wow, I guessed I'd enjoy this, and it was so much more powerful than I'd expected. I will be thinking about this story for a while.

A great book about the power of stories, the past, our personal histories and culture and how we as individuals and communities deal with  the trauma of persecution and loss. A historical fanatsy with a wonderful world of magic. Wonderfully complex characters and points of view. It will make you cry. Also personal point of fixation, great shapeshifter pov, a fucken asshole but great. Also loved the house pov too.

My favorite book so far this year. Scary and beautiful and so layered.

I REALLY wanted to love this book. But I didn't even really like it. There were too many things going on, and yet, nothing happened. I know that doesn't make sense but that's how it felt. I didn't like any of the characters. I didn't understand the magic. I really only finished it because I felt like I should.

Read for 'Books & Brews' book club at my library/work. Really enjoyed this powerful folktale retelling. I had a hard time getting into it at first, but the story and its characters and lore definitely grew on me throughout and I was totally immersed by the end.

Thoughtful and elegant storytelling with an important message. The description of the puppets brought this one to life for me. I did find it hard to understand how Thistlefoot could exist in our world without more explanation of the magic that enabled her existence, but not a breaking point for me, just an unsatisfied curiosity.
