Thoughtful and elegant storytelling with an important message. The description of the puppets brought this one to life for me. I did find it hard to understand how Thistlefoot could exist in our world without more explanation of the magic that enabled her existence, but not a breaking point for me, just an unsatisfied curiosity.
I know these characters come from a background of trauma, but the way they both refuse to communicate is super frustrating, and causes problems that could easily be avoided by talking, and they should be able to see that.
A few kind of big unanswered questions for me. (How and why did the band start their hunt and how did they get the tools and knowledge to, you know, hunt a story ghost?) And the "moral" of the book was a tad on the nose...I don't need it spelled out so strongly.
Some lovely passages, but also some clunky writing in many others. Good, but not excellent

5 Stars! LOVED this one. The audiobook narrator (January LaVoy) did a WONDERFUL job at bringing this already magical book to life (as LaVoy always does). It is part fantasy read, part historical fiction, part folkloric tale. I loved the character development of the Yaga siblings and their childhood memories spent putting on puppet shows. I think this book is very timely as well, and showcases Jewish history through a family lens in a unique way. Thistlefoot was such a distinct character, and I found that I didn't really want to leave this book at all.
A remkarably assured debut novel that uses the language of fable and folklore to explore generational trauma.

This is an incredible book, with a beautiful plot, and amazing characters. However, I don't think I was the target audience for the writing. I still don't regret reading this unique and captivating book. If you like a disjointed storyline, of multiple perspectives of multiple time points and not connecting until the very end, I think you'll love this book. I find myself thinking of the characters often, and what it means to carry the memories of those who have passed
