Abandon, les Enfers

Meg Cabot

3.6 AVERAGE

It's an interesting read, but it's definitely not my favorite series by Meg Cabot. It lacks a depth to it and makes me a little sad because there is so much potential in this series. Like come on, Persephone and Hades? Greek Myths? I live for this kind of stuff so it makes me a little sad to see it fall flat. However it's fun reading so it has that going for it.

I didn't enjoy this book much for a number of reasons. The plot had a lot of problems and I was confused as to the direction of the book and the point of the story. A lot of points of the book seemed very random and the characters awkward and not believable. It seemed like it was all thrown together and it didn't make a lot of sense. Also, the time frame bothers me. This book takes place over about a day, and the previous book over a week or so, yes?

So I am a bit skeptical about the supposed depth of Pierce's "love" for John.

I also found it weird that despite the reward out for Pierce and her sudden disappearance, most people seem overly calm about her sudden return and barely question anything she says. To that end, barely anyone seems to recognize her even though her "disguise" is wearing a denim jacket. What?

Overall, I am disappointed with the plot and the believability of the story.

First I'd like to say that I started reading this book about 4 days ago but added it to my "to read" list in March so it looks like it took me months to read it, untrue. ANYWAY, this was a solid book. It was a bit boring at first but I think it's just because it needed to tie together the series, the middle book is usually like this. I liked the way it ended and set everything up for what should be a great end to the trilogy.

Just as bad as the first book.

I just really hate everything John and Pierce related. They are the worst and they have absolutely zero chemistry! I wouldn't mind tearing my hair out instead of reading about them. John is constantly manipulating Pierce in this book so she'll do what he wants. AND SHE LETS HIM! She stops getting mad about it and just goes along with it!? GIRL NO! She also basically gave up on life so she could be with John 🤮🤮🤮

We learn some more about what John does and his past, and I did not give a single fuck. I don't like him and I never will. It doesn't help that he dismisses every idea Pierce has as stupid/ridiculous. Which some of them are, but he could at least think about them. There's a bit more of plot with the struggle with the Furies, but besides that it's mainly Pierce and John central.

It is no secret that Meg Cabot is my favorite author.( Have I started a previous review with this sentence? It feels like I have, and my apologies if that is the case) She has this way with words and characters and her books are all varied, but one thing is always constant- her sense of humor. I know that if I pick up one of her books, ANY one of her books, that I will enjoy myself and that I will get more than a few chuckles out of it. It doesn't matter if she is writing mythology, contemporary, or paranormal- her characters are always lovable, snarky(or witty, or sarcastic) and awesome. Pierce is no different. She is strong willed but she cares so much about others.

I really enjoyed Abandon. John is brooding and hot and I love his protective streak. I couldn’t wait for the sequel, Underworld to come out. Mythology has been my favorite YA sub-genre for a few months now, and the underworld has always held a certain fascination for me. In college I remember doing a comparative paper analyzing various cultures views on the underworld and it was some of the most fun I have ever had while researching a paper for school.

I liked Underworld even more than Abandon! The story felt a little more developed and I loved all the interactions between Pierce and John. And there were a lot of interactions. While they do need to work on their communication a little bit, you can tell that they are both trying. In that respect this was a very realistic relationship. (you know, minus the whole lord of the underworld thing going on.) And that bird that John gave Pierce- way too cute!

There are a few new characters that we got to know in Underworld and they are each kooky and interesting. Plus, what on earth is going on with Pierce's cousin? I am still a little baffled by his behavior. I have a feeling we will be finding more out about him in the final book.

Underworld is a brisk, super enjoyable read. Meg Cabot has her finger on the pulse of pop culture and all things teen. I can't wait to find out what is going to happen next for John and Pierce but I am super sad that it is going to be the last book in the trilogy. I feel like there is easily enough background and plot to make this into a longer series! (wink, wink, nudge nudge Ms. Cabot and Scholastic)
adventurous dark mysterious fast-paced

“Cursed?” I offered, my voice croaky because of my unshed tears.
“It isn’t cursed.” John said deliberately, rearranging the chain around my neck, “if you’re wearing it. It’s blessed.”

I honestly did not think that the second book would be as good as the first, but boy was I wrong. I had started reading it after work and ended up staying up until midnight so that I could finish it. I just could not put the book down!

I think this was due to the fact that Pearce and John are just coming into their relationship and things are still very new and exciting to both of them. Pearce was great in this second installment and I really got to like her. She became a stronger person and was not whiny like in the first book. I just need to take a moment to swoon about John Hayden! He is described as not too good looking, but bad boy enough to make any girl swoon. Who wouldn’t fall head over heels for the lord of the underworld? You can’t get any more bad boy than that!

I also enjoyed the introduction of the many characters in the underworld. Henry would have to be my favorite because even though he had lived for decades, he still is as sweet and innocent as a little boy!

The ending was fantastic and I can’t wait for the next book! I can’t imagine how things are going to play out and am dying to know!!!

This book was far better than the first book in the trilogy. There was more action, more romance, more love, more of everything in this book than in the first part. I loved it. John and Pierce's relationship is growing stronger. There are amazing characters in this book. (Like the crew of the Liberty, I love them!) And also this book is more sexier and more fascinating. What else could a girl wish for? LOVED IT!

Much like Abandon, Underworld did not really have a plot line. The whole book takes place in one day with the characters tirelessly (but annoyingly) running around to no aim.

I honestly was disappointed but I have had a hard time pinpointing why. Maybe because Cabot's characters are usually so vivid and bright and in the last couple of books I wouldn't be able to pick them out of a lineup.

I wanted to hear more about Kayla's vivaciousness, and Henry's short-circuiting psyche. And Pierce - another one of the ever-present, "The evidence is all in front of me but what does it MEAN??", kind of Heroines. For once I wish we could dispense with the dramatic irony and just let the heroines figure out things at the pace of a fully functioning human being, not one hindered by plot devices.

Maybe the fact that this wasn't so good has more to do with the fact that it's the second book in a trilogy which makes me question the wisdom of the trilogy convention in YA novels.

All in all I expected more from this book, but I'm still looking forward to the third. I love the Hades/Persephone adaption idea and Cabot has always been one of my favorite authors.
