Amor Towle's best complete story. Everything connects and wraps together so beautifully and with Towle's already colorful prose it makes for an enjoyable time reading that has you thinking everytime the book isn't in your hands.

had a strong feeling this would be my rating before i even opened the book lol. i wasnt a huge fan of the audiobook, but when i followed along physically it wasn't bad. i surprisingly actually enjoyed the first 200 pages, but just like every other reviewer said, it gets boring and repetitive when they hit the road. and there are random religious moments and then random greek mythology moments?? i was so confused at times and also couldnt get myself to pay attention a lot of the times.

i read this book solely for a youtube project so i didnt have high hopes lol

Absolutely enthralling adventure story in the 1950’s.

Excellent. Debated 4.75 but really just hit me right and deserves the full stars

It's a very American story, capturing a moment when cars had become common enough for the nation to develop a highway culture. Two brothers and two escaped convicts travel from a very rural town to the still growing world of NYC. They're seeking a fortune through a plan that may not be quite legal but that seems quite fair and just all things considered

Personally, i think dual narrators is an overused device, but this book lets several take the helm. And it works. I'd normally struggle with more than a couple of narrators...memory isn't my strong suit...Towles makes such compelling characters that I knew each one and could follow several threads all interwoven.

There's a lot here, including a nod to the power of books and the power of being the one to tell the tale. Highly recommend taking the trip

Very good story and interesting characters. I would recommend this book to others. At 500 plus pages it is not a quick read.

It's hard to say how I felt about this one! Great characterizations and good writing but the plot was confusing--in that there didn't seem to be much of a plot. The ending left something to be desired too.
