I have such mixed feelings after finishing The Lincoln Highway. Duchess was such a frustrating and annoying character, constantly ruining the plans with “good” intentions. Parts I read so quickly, like I couldn’t get enough and others felt slower. I feel so conflicted around the ending. I don’t need every book to have a sappy happy ending, but this feels both disappointing and like the only way it could have ended at the same time. It felt like their journey on the Lincoln Highway would be this amazing journey and fresh start, and it’s not…but at the same time it is in a way. Maybe that’s the beauty in the story. The more I think about it the more it feels like hard life lessons that we all learn when things fail to go as planned. Either way Towels is a master storyteller with the ability to draw you into his setting and characters.

This was a slow burn for me that became completely engrossing. Not the road trip escapade belied but the title, but a journey of its own. The characters and their wonderings and motivations were so precisely imagined. I’ll be thinking about this book for a long while.

I was so frustrated by this book. I have loved Towles' other works, but founds this to be a different experience altogether. For me, it was a very slow read until the last 1/3. I struggled to sympathize with most of the characters, and the plot itself frustrated me because of the way it was generated by the actions of unlikable (for me) characters. There were a couple too many POVs for me, such that I was confused at times. There were a couple of characters, especially minor characters like Abacus and Ulyses who I really enjoyed. After enjoying the last 1/3 of the book much more, I was so mad at the ending. Overall, I'm not sure what Towles was trying to do with this one.
