A fun little story about a man who wanted to be an explorer but is a house painter, and gets sent a penguin by admiral Drake. Some rather dated gender stereotypes.

but elise! it’s just a goofy little book about penguins! it’s for kids! it’s supposed to be fun and adventurous! how could you be so harsh?

idk because i hate when men think the world revolves around them.

imagine exploiting wildlife and forcing everyone to accommodate to the needs of your basically kidnapped slave pets that you keep in a climate they can’t survive in AND ALSO abandoning your wife and kids. and dealing with strange financial decisions. and just kind of being rude and selfish in general. why would i read this to my kids…

whatever it’s not that deep but sometimes i need to be mean.

I loved it, the kids loved it, it had to do with penguins. Can't get much better than that!

Obviously meant to be cute for children, but reading as an adult, just seems dated and disappointing.

A great one to read to your kids.

I have such fond memories of my second grade teacher reading this that when I saw it in the library I had to pull it for my (pre-K) son. It's a bit of a stretch read but not really. There are some dated technology references and formal language but he liked it so well he asked to read rather than watch Saturday morning cartoons.

My 9yr old boy gives it 4.5 ☆ because he enjoyed the silliness of the book. I give it 3☆ because I thought the book just plain silly.
