Some great characterization in the setup of the plot, but once things get set up, the story goes where you would expect. Also, I'm not wild about the padding at the end of the book which seems included for people who forgot the plot of this not particularly long or complicated book.

This novel wasn’t quite as good as its excellent precursor, Laidlaw. The plot details often felt obscure and I’m not totally sure I understood all the character motivations. Having said that, the writing is excellent (and sometimes difficult) and I find Jack Laidlaw to be a very interesting/flawed/complex character.

Second in the series from the author dubbed as the father of tartan noir. Laidlaw is a great character who is somewhat aloof from the typical Glasgow police detective, a literary artistic intelligent man with an acute intelligence. In this book, Laidlaw is called to the hospital bedside of a dying alcoholic who lives on the streets. There follows a hunt for a missing student while at the same time several local villains are also keen to find him. Very enjoyable.
