This book was a delight! Interesting plot with ending I did not see coming, romantic, steamy, and with likeable characters. I listened to the audiobook version and I also just really enjoyed the narrator.
Read for Book Riot's Read Harder Challenge 2022, prompt #4, "Read a book in any genre by a POC that’s about joy and not trauma," Bonus: COMPLETE ALL TASKS WITH LGBTQ AUTHORS," with my addition of no cis men authors.
This was exactly what I needed right now. Nice fun, fanfic-trope-y romance. The queerness felt very genuine. Only downside: not enough sex for a romance novel.

A serviceable read that is more insightful from an emotional intelligence stand-point than entertaining as a romance. What character development does occur seemed to eclipse the romance elements of the book. While I found the book thought-provoking and the fake relationship carried me through the whole thing, the characters never fully blossomed into three dimensions for me. Bez felt more real in her brief cameo in How To Catch a Queen than her own story, where she just felt a little flat. I think Cole struggled with this as well, given the super-convenient twist(s) to bring like five things to a v. rapid conclusion in the last few pages and lack of an epilogue (because there is literally nothing left to wonder about or say, it was that quick a wrap up and that cardboardish of characters).
Nonetheless, I did enjoy Cole’s subversion of the one-bed trope and the lack of a full-on third act break-up.

Refugee neglect/crisis in the Mediterranean is touched upon.

The transition between the fun quirky bits and the spice was abrupt.
I really tried to like the cheesiness of the whole thing.. but there were too many things that just bothered me along the way.
Props to the end though.
