I haven’t read How to Catch a Queen, so I don’t know how much that affects things without the bit of background I would have gotten there, but this one really left me bored and ready for something to happen.

Makeda’s life becomes turned upside down after she loses her job and is dumped by her girlfriend. A change of pace couldn’t come soon enough for her. When an investigator shows up insisting that Makeda is her country’s missing heir, that really isn’t the change of pace that Makeda was expecting.

As I mentioned at the beginning, I don’t know how much background was provided in the previous novel, but I felt like there wasn’t really any provided here. There were little snippets provided that didn’t leave me completely lost, but I still felt as if there was just something lacking.

The lack of side characters is something that did leave me wanting more. As a romance, I knew the story was going to focus on that, but without side characters, that’s all there was, romance. There were no friends and no diving into family relations. It would make sense then, without those relationships, that it would give more time for Bez and Makeda to bond and spend time together, but even their relationship didn’t click.

The whole time, Bez and Makeda argued and bickered with one another. This is a relationship where I can still feel chemistry. That’s not a problem for me, but I did not feel the chemistry between them.

Queer rep and an Anastasia retelling left me excited. Not to mention fake dating and only one bed trope, but despite all of those this book just didn’t work.
