Me:

The Friend Zone was a lot heavier of a book than I was expecting to be honest. With a title like that I’m envisioning some laughs, some angst and some steam… and that was delivered but with an unexpected side of emotions that really hit me in the feels.

“This was the best date I’d ever been on. And it wasn’t even a date.”

In The Friend Zone Kristen and Josh meet through their two best friends and immediately have a connection that they can’t deny. They have to though, Kristen is adamant a. because she has a boyfriend away on deployment and b. because Josh wants kids, and she can never give them to him.

“Why won’t you let me love you?”

An interesting premise that already goes deeper than the stereotype unfolded into quite a long story about friendship, being there for each other and accepting each other baggage and all. We have issues in here of infertility, chronic pain, negating parents, loss of loved ones, break ups, major accidents and more. It’s just bam bam bam on the emotions.

I did really enjoy this book, the depth of their relationship, the strong foundation and the emotional feels. There is a lot packed into here that we deal with and most of it is enjoyable to read.

“Do you ever see yourself acting crazy, but you can’t stop because you’re not a quitter?”

My main issue with this story is the fact that Kristen lies about her fertility issues in order to keep Josh at arms length. I do understand there is no need to bring it up right away but after a certain point Josh and Kristen are closer to each other than anyone else in their lives. Rather than be upfront with Josh she asks him about his want for kids and then uses that against him to take the choice to be with her out of his hands. I guess I can understand where this protective instinct may come from but unfortunately it felt like a big no-no for me and although I’m glad it was resolved, it took up too big of a chunk of this story for me.

“She was like a unicorn. A mythical creature. An honest, no-drama woman who didn’t bullshit and drank beer and cussed and didn’t care about what people thought of her. She was a unicorn, tucked in the body of an attractive woman with a great ass. And I couldn’t have her.”

The ending was a little guessable, I would have preferred one that wasn’t so neat when in comes to Josh and Kristen after all the heartache we’d gone through but I was happy nonetheless.

Be ready for a some misty eyes when you pick up The Friend Zone and beware not to get caught out by the cutesy title and cover.
