I started the book with expectations of loving it. I don't know if it was me or the book but I struggled to stay engaged or to finish. I adore the sea and figured this would be a great story that would keep me super engaged. It did not. I admit it could be me. A lot is going on in my personal life and my mind has been distracted and I was using the audiobook.

It's essentially gem trading meets pirating meets a girl ditched by her father without a mother. There's a little bit of a love story at the end but it's not the primary focus. It could be in the next book but I doubt it. The primary focus is the girl and her father's relationship or lack thereof. I think I just wasn't in the right headspace to enjoy this book.

I have been putting off reading this because I was worried I would be disappointed. I really enjoyed it, though!
It wasn't entirely what I expected, but the characters and setting drew me in.

I’m not usually a pirate type of girl but oh. My. MERLIN. I LOVE IT

“And I think I’ve loved you since the first time we anchored in Jeval.”
