This book was such an incredible listen. I was captivated by the interlocking stories and the juxtaposition between  Mama Letty's past, Avery's mom's past, and the present situations Avery is in. There is so much of our lives that is influenced by the lives of those who came before us, and this book perfectly captured that feeling. By the end of the book I was sobbing, both because of it's beauty and also the deep-rooted pain that comes from generational trauma, trauma that is so enmeshed in the lives of these characters. I highly recommend!

I really loved what this novel had to say about inter generational trauma. The setting was so wonderfully told through the eyes of the narrator, Avery. I think the work could have done a better job supporting it themes around racial justice and injustice, but otherwise it was an amazingly written story.

This is a book about generational family trauma, and still, it manages to be so personal and focused, which I think is a hard balance to strike, but this book did. I really liked the the way that facets of the story were revealed little by little. The ending is definitely not wrapped up in a perfect bow, and for this type of story, I was totally ok with that.
