wow SO many things to say but let me first start with the fact that I loved this reading experience and I'm so so so glad I stumbled across this book!! this needs to go booktok viral or something so that everyone can read it. So beautiful and cool and I really enjoyed the mystery piece of it as well as the black history and learning about the inherent violence of small southern towns and the grief and generational trauma and of course the queer finding yourself love aspect (with the most amazing shock of my life) was highly appreciated. the scene with the three women on the beach possibly is the most beautiful writing i've ever read like being able to visualize that was such a privilege. read this book!!

I was genuinely surprised that this was Jas Hammond‘s first novel. Baby, I was a little nervous in the beginning I didn’t know if I was gonna like the story, but by chapter 3 there was no getting away from the story. Three generations of black women under one roof, seeking to reckon with their past, find contentment in their present and anticipate the end… it was a mighty big task, but Hammonds found a beautifully intimate way to thread the needle, and I stayed her every second of it.

The writing was beautiful. The characters delicately crafted and real. The lack of accountability was unsettling while being realistic. But some of that lack of accountability led to an unsatisfying ending for me and knocked it down a star or so.
Sidenote: I totally picked this book up because of its cover art.

Oh God, this book was devastatingly beautiful. It broke my heart and made it feel full at the same time. The writing? 10/10. There’s so much more meaning in this book that wasn’t written on the pages. Officially my favorite book I ever read. Please read it, you won’t regret. “I wanted to cry because I didn’t understand how a world so beautiful could also harbor so much pain”.
