What I Did Like:
-Everything I said about Donn’s Hill still applies. This is well written, has great writing about the paranormal events, never forgets that it’s a mystery, and brings in horror in a good way.
-Add to that the horror going up a notch. The language mastery in this one allows the author to dial up the horror and make you FEEL that along with Mac. It’s really approaching read-it-in-the-daytime levels here.
-Characters. Specifically Mac, Kit, and Graham. They’re realistic, flawed (in an important way), and loveable. I adore all of them and I want more stories with them.

Who Should Read This One:
-Paranormal fans. The ghosts and psychics remain well written but this time we’re also bringing in other things that are well done.
-Mystery/Thriller fans who like trying to piece together puzzles.
-Horror fans. This one is even scarier than the previous book in this series.

My Rating: 5 Stars, again. This book will bring all kinds of readers great joy. Go get a copy!

I received a copy of this book from the publisher, BooksGoSocial, and the author via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Mackenzie Clair hasn't been in Donn's Hill very long, but she feels like she's beginning to settle down and the place is even beginning to feel like home. She's gotten used to her psychic thing and is slowly learning more about it, the TV show that she films with her friends - The Soul Searchers - is a hit, her kitty Striker is as healthy as a horse and things are just all round going well. Besides the nasty spirit lurking at the cabin near the lake that has injured an innocent who was just looking for some adventure. Mac and Co. have a plan, and just as they're about to put it into action, their seance is interrupted by the one man that Mac said wasn't welcome - Raziel - a famous psychic debunker who has set his sights on Donn's Hill. After Raziel is found murdered in the local inn, Mac is a suspect and she must do everything she can to clear her name. Will she be able to prove that she's innocent? And will she be able to discover who the strange spirit from beyond is that is proclaiming to be able to help her do so?

I'm a sucker for a paranormal mystery, and this one sounded great, and don't get me wrong, it was a good story and it had a lot of well researched information in it in regard to the spiritual stuff which was a welcome change. I just found that the characters were a little blah. It's a little hard to describe, the characters were well written, but I just didn't seem to connect with them barely at all. I cared about what happened to them, but I felt rather indifferent to what was going on. The one that I had the most love for was Mac's kitty - Striker, her character was incredibly well written and I just wanted to pick her up and cuddle her until she clawed my eyes out. And funnily enough, a character who didn't receive much screen time - Elizabeth - I liked her, and I'm hoping that she's going to be a regular in the coming instalments to this series, because I think she'll be great. But as for the rest of the character, they were just very...blah.

The mystery was very well written, and I had an inkling but to be honest, my inkling was a litttttttle bit off the mark, I was close, and my thoughts behind why were actually correct, however, this didn't impact my opinion on the story negatively because I was still a bit surprised at the reveal of the murderer, which as you would all know by now, is a must for me. If I figure it all out a quarter through the book and the other characters have no idea, I get frustrated very quickly. It's just no fun when that happens.

I haven't read the first instalment in this series, but I am wanting to check it out as I feel like I'll get some back story on the characters, as well as a situation that occurred previously that is mentioned a couple of times, I have an idea on what happened as it is somewhat explained, but I'd like to see the incident with my own eyes, so to speak. I also feel that reading the first instalment might help endear the characters to me a bit more, and I think that may be why I couldn't really connect with them in this one.

In this instalment, an overarching story line begins, and to be honest, I'm incredibly intrigued by it. One thing is mentioned in this book that I don't want to go into because I don't want to ruin everything, but I was absolutely giddy at the fact that this particular thing was included in a paranormal story and I really hope we get to hear more about it and the reason that it came into Mac's life in the first place. I feel like that question was kinda answered at the end, but this story line has just really intrigued me.

All in all this was a good paranormal mystery, easy reading, well written, I just didn't really feel anything for the characters and reading it was sort of an after thought for me. I will be continuing with the series though, and I plan to go back and read the first book as soon as I can.

A fun and entertaining paranormal mystery, with attractive and realistic, flawed characters and a good plot.

I liked the idea of a town in which paranormal is an everyday matter and the struggle is between old-timers and new-comers as some of the latter aren't very honest, to say the least.

I like that the sense of horror is brought by the mystery and not by gruesome happenings, and it never goes over the top.

The writing is really good and Jessica McEvoy's narration is truly great.

This series is severely underrated. The audiobook with my favorite horror narrator Jessica Mcevoy is unbeatable, the writing is incredible, the characters unique. I love diving back into this world. Also THAT ENDING!!! I can’t wait for Book 3! I need more Striker the cat in my life. Please listen to the audiobooks for this series ASAP
