it breaks my heart to change the review, but I feel sick. Genuinely, how dare you? How does something this beautiful and tender come from a place of such deception?

For context, just go to twitter/Instagram for this author's name.

If I could give this book 100 stars I would! Ugh I loved it! The spice, the humor, the love!!! Perfect book wrapped up in 141 pages. So happy with how they wrapped this story up. Loved the representation, and the first book I have ever read where I was actually rooting for the trope at the end.

I read this book in good faith, and wanted to rate it well or not at all. But this book had issues I can’t ignore:

I really liked the representation of polyamory, and the relationships *seemed* well written—until the very end. This is probably just a mistake on the author’s part, but Peter “wanted [Ethan] since [he] was twenty years old,” Ethan is twenty-nine in the novel, and they had “been at the beginning” of their “something” together thirteen years before the beginning of the novel. I will say that there is room for interpretation here, because Ethan canonically has known Peter since “they were boys.” However, according to my math, their relationship, or at least some type of lust, began when Peter was 20 and Ethan was 16. This revelation came at the *end* of the book, and it really ruined my reading experience overall.

Then there was the characterization of the “gossipy she-devils”—a phrase which appears multiple times in Ethan’s narration to describe apothecary women. This phrase was misogynistic, and the narrative tacitly approved of that misogyny when the bitter woman came to buy Ethan’s potion on account of gossip and was horribly rude.

Enjoyed a lot - a really cosy read. Despite its short length, the worldbuilding was great and the characters were pretty solid. Even the smut (if you could call it that?) was well-written and not over-the-top.
