Godzilla and Godzilla Raids Again by Shigeru Kayama and translated by Jeffrey Angles is a novella adaptation of the first two Godzilla movies. It follows quite closely to the plot of the movies (from my understanding), showcasing Godzilla's attack on two different Japanese metropolises.
This was quite disappointing as these novellas are very much tell (not show) adaptations of the movies. The writing was a bit too straight forward and didn't do a good job of immersing the reader in what was happening. Characters felt relatively surface level and as if they weren't given a full amount of time to be fleshed out. I'm not sure if this is a problem with the translation itself or if the novellas are just very cut and dry. Honestly, I would recommend watching the movies instead of reading these novellas as after reading them, I felt like I would have had a fuller experience through watching the films.
I did enjoy the afterward, which provides some great context on the inspiration behind the movies, what they represented, and what it was like for the translator to localize and translate the novellas into English. This story definitely interested me more in Godzilla and the wider franchise, I just wish it had created more atmosphere and shown more than directly told the story.
