I couldn’t put it down. Even better than the original.

The book falls flat with an unlikable protagonist who remains stubbornly immature and fails to grow, particularly in his insensitive actions towards Sam. His unearned reconciliation with her feels forced and undeserved, undermining any potential for character development.

The ending kind of ruined the rest of the book for me—the rest of the book was better than the first, I think. It still was overly reliant on worldbuilding but was less misogynistic. We didn’t get as much depth on the characters as in the first. I enjoyed the cultural references and the adventurous romp with a little more heart than the first book. Will Wheaton continues to be an excellent narrator. But the
ending felt just out of complete left-field and very uncharacteristic of Artemis. It was an interesting idea but felt wildly undeveloped since it was more or less introduced in the last 5 minutes of the book. No consideration of the implications or exploring the tension between Wade not logging into the oasis again but still choosing to create Parcival. No real exploration of what “immortality” means in a digital context. And largely unrelated to the rest of the book.

If you liked the first one you’ll like this one too. Just as self indulgent with the pop culture nostalgia as the first. I appreciated the addition of middle earth. I also really like it’s vision of the future. Without giving spoilers, there’s a new technology that end up making people less prejudiced, which i would hope would be true if that tech ever existed.

I liked it more than I expected. Did a good job of expanding the world and not feeling like the same story as the first book.

It did, however, go way too in depth at times about things that meant nothing to be. There was a much stronger disconnect in this book than the last for my lack of knowledge of specific pop culture. Other than that, pretty enjoyable

You know, the first book felt kind of boring and a drag at some parts but nowhere near close this one.
That entire Prince section was enough reason on its own to entirely give up and throw away the whole book.
It felt like it went on and on for half of the books length and I couldn’t bring myself to really give a shit.
