This book was a huge disappointment. I expected a cheesy romance with an accidental wedding trope and instead got a mess of a book that made me angrier with every turning page.

I disliked every single character in this book. The author diversity-dropped at every possible turn, piling up oppression after oppression and turning what could have been a fun trope-y book into an exhausting read.

Every friendship in the book is toxic, Grace's relationship with her parents is abusive, and the "romantic" storyline is painful to follow between two caricatures of a character. The mentions of mental health were beyond problematic (calling people "feral" and "things" when they are in the hospital for mental health issues) and the fetishisation of minority groups was nauseating.

Perhaps what irked me most, however, was the word "monster" (a word triggering for many people in the lgbtq+ community) and how the author attempted to romanticize it.

I think that people see Las Vegas marriage and immediately assume that this is a romance, which is definitely the wrong frame of mind to read this book from. The romance is swoon-worthy and some of the lines are tooth-achingly sweet, but it really isn’t what the book is about.

Grace is an excellent character, and her experience as a disillusioned post-grad is relatable. Rogers has a lot to say about academia, mental health, society’s treatment of black women, and parental expectations. Great read for sure. The characters are great, I love how queer and diverse even the background characters are.

My big critique of this book is awkward dialogue. The exposition in the first chapter is clumsy (people never call each other by their full names in Every Single Sentence). However, because this is Rogers’ first book and she’s so young, I think this will definitely improve by her next book. I can’t wait for her next one!!

Morgan Rogers says in her acknowledgements that this book wouldn't have been possible without her community. And the love Rogers feels for her own networks is strongly reflected in this work. It's odd to say about a romance novel, but the main romance between Grace and Yuki sort of takes a backseat to Grace's relationships with her family--both by birth and my choice.

It was lovely to read a book about someone who feels lost after graduation, which is something I relate to strongly. It's not the fluffy, rom-com that I think some of the marketing led me to believe it would be, but it is spectacular. It's reflective and slow and a deep dive into the ways that we hurt people and they hurt us when we are not honest with each other and when we are not willing to look inward and begin healing.
