It was good but slower paced that Iā€™m used to and did have to drag myself through it to some points. That ending though šŸ‘Œ

If I had read this not knowing who the author was, it would only have taken me one or two chapters to figure out that he's a gross old white man. He is clearly a fantastic writer with a head for intricate fantasy stories, but he is obsessed with teenage girls to a disturbing extent. While I understand that at some points in history it was customary for girls to get married around the time of their first period, wee old Georgey absolutely delights in discussing the naked body and genitalia of the fourteen-year-old Daenerys. While other chapters are about war, plotting, being kept prisoner, and politics, Dany's chapters are about her getting into a bath or her having sex with her big burly husband. Out of nowhere, he'll be talking about "her sex" or "her lips" even though she's doing something very normal like getting dressed or riding a horse. The focus of a scene won't be her adjusting to luxury and having servants, but how the moon shines off her "milk-laden breasts" as she gets out of a bath, or how her handmaid "slips a perfumed finger into her sex" as she gets out of the bath. She is almost always in the bath!!!!!!  My guy! Get a grip and lust after someone who can actually consent, I beg you!

Truly, this is a beast of a book. I love the character development of Daenerys, Robb, and Jon especially. While the book didn't make me immediately love the characters, I found that I really grew attached to them throughout the process of reading, really caring for some and truly hating others. Overall, it's a truly amazing piece of fiction. I look forward to buying and reading the rest of the currently available series. Definitely for more mature readers, and I think if you like Brandon Sanderson, these books are right up your alley (and vis versa), though be prepared for much darker themes and descriptions.

I watched the TV series before reading the book and I think it made it easier to keep the characters straight. Otherwise I think all the names and people could be overwhelming to keep track of while understanding the world.
