Six Feet Under

4.5 stars

Tonya Kappes is a master at small-town Kentucky mystery, and her heroine Kenni Lowry is a delightful mix of strength and hot mess. While Six Feet Under can be read as a standalone, I’ve so enjoyed watching Kenni from the beginning until now. Especially her relationship with swoony deputy Finn, which has some particularly swoonilicious developments in this installment of the series.

I love the interplay between Kenni and her ghost sidekick, her beloved grandfather. As Poppa pops in and out, Kenni is getting caught more often talking to ‘herself’, and I think in book #5, Dead as a Doornail, some of her secrets are going to be forced out in the open. She’s at least going to have to let Finn in on the whole thing, since he’s the closest to her these days. And I don’t have a good enough read on Finn yet to know how that’s going to play out. She may have to spill the beans to her mama too, and that – i predict – will not go well.

Speaking of her mama, she is a bundle of ‘hot mess’. Viv is going all out for the Culinary Channel’s visit, and bless her heart she ends up on the wrong side of the law more than once. From the questionable Botox source to the pink handicap tag (that she doesn’t need anyway) to the dead chef who gave her a bad review, Viv keeps Kenni more than busy in this book. And her melodramatics make for hilarious reading.

Bottom Line: Six Feet Under is another excellent cozy mystery from Tonya Kappes. She’s nailed the cadence and quirkiness of a small Kentucky town, and both her main and recurring characters are a hoot. I love the character growth we’ve seen so far in Kenni, and I’m waiting eagerly for the next book to see how some of these thing will continue to play out. While I had pretty well figured out whodunit from the beginning, it’s so delightfully plotted (including the subthreads) that this didn’t bother me at all. I just enjoyed the journey as Kenni (and her Poppa) figured it out too. A sweet dose of romance and plenty of chuckles await you as well!

I received an advance copy of 'Six Feet Under' in exchange for an honest review.

This is my first Tonya Kappes story. I wasn't sure what to expect, and I'll admit that at the start of the story when the sheriff's 'Pop' appears, I was slightly hesitant as to whether or not this would be the type of book I would enjoy. It very quickly became apparent that I was going to enjoy the book, and I ended up finishing it in one sitting. I found the main characters to be extremely likeable, and although I didn't think the book was hilarious, it was definitely amusing.

I'd quite like to read some more from this author - I like that it was a mystery but with a little difference - I loved the character of 'Pop,' and I am intrigued to find out if the sheriff ever tells Finn about him.

SIX FEET UNDER A Kenni Lowry Mystery by Tonya Kappes

This is a series but may be read as a standalone. There is a wonderful backstory with Sheriff Kenni and the ghost of Poppa her dead grandfather and former sheriff. This time there has been a murder of a sharp tongued critic/chef and Kenni's mother is at the top of the list of suspects! Kenni's mother is a character which I have come to love with her flair and drama she literally brought a smile to my face many times! I followed along as Kenni  followed the clues to the would be killer with the assistance of Poppa. This delightful cozy did not fail to delight or surprise me with the colorful characters and surprising plot twist at the end. I found this installment to be fast paced, well plotted and a solid cozy mystery. I am invested in Kenni and Finns romance and look forward to the next installment of this series.

If you are a fan of Cozy Mysteries, quirky but lovable characters and a well written murder  mystery then I recommend this book.

Six Feet Under is book 4 in the Kenni Lowry series. For some reason I thought I reviewed this already but I guess not? I'll keep this fairly quick since it's been awhile since I read this. If you enjoy cozy mystery novels with a touch of paranormal you might enjoy this series.

Sheriff Kenni Lowry is back and the whole town is excited that celebrity chef, Frank Von Lee from the Culinary Channel is coming to town. He's there to try Kenni's mom's chicken pot pie. We have quite a bit going on besides the celebrity chef being there though, we have an illegal botox ring operating somewhere, someone distributing fake handicap placards as well as lots of drama and red herrings. Add in that Frank Von Lee winds up dead after eating something and you have one heck of a story.

Six Feet Under is a nice addition to the series. I really enjoy TKappes writing style, it makes the story go by quickly and keeps your attention. I did figure out who the killer was before it was revealed unfortunately but the story overall was well done. If you love cozy mysteries set in a small town you should give these a try.

This series is a favorite of mine. It has everything a cozy needs - humor, a good mystery, not too much drama, and - of course - a loyal pet. Ok, that last one may not be important to everyone, but I love it when pets are included in books. One thing that makes this series unique is that Kenni, being a sheriff, actually has a valid reason to investigate murders. This creates a little bit of conflict of interest when her mother becomes the main suspect, along with somehow being tangled up in other minor cases at the same time. Overall it was a highly enjoyable addition to a wonderful series.

The weakest of the series, exposing all the problems with Kenni that I've had since book 1 and been hoping that she would get over. I like my heroines to be competent - and Kenni seems to be getting worse. In this she's investigating her own mother and although she eventually sees the problem, she's still doing slightly dubious investigating when she's off the case. Add to the fact that her mother is one of the more annoying characters in the series and I found this maddening. Definitely time for me to give this series a rest for a bit.

Tonya Kappes writes the best southern mysteries with all the charm she puts into them. The Kenni Lowry series is proof of that! With just a slight paranormal twist you'll fall in love with this cozy town and cast of characters. Tonya keeps you guessing with full of surprises.

Hey Y'all!! Did you hear the latest gossip in Cottonwood? NO??? Well, I heard at Tina's that you can get your crows feet filled in for $25 at a Botox party, people are hanging fake handicap tags in their cars (and they're PINK), the sheriff's mother is a murder suspect, and...wait, what??? Kenni's mom killed someone?
When a celebrity chef is poisoned with what SEEMS to be Mrs. Lowry's famous chicken pot pie, the mayor kicks Kenni off the homicide case because she's too close to the number one suspect! The sheriff can't even help clear her own mama's name...or can she? With the help of Poppa, the ghost of her grandpa, some great spy work by her best friend Jolene, and even an impromptu cake baking class, Kenni finds out there's a lot more going on in Cottonwood than meets the eye. There are lots of twists and turns and even some red herrings (you'll think you've guess who the killer is...but just you wait) in this well planned mystery!
This 4th book in the Kenni Lowry mystery series is just as fun and entertaining as the others. Full of Southern charm and engaging characters, I am eagerly awaiting the next book in the series!

Six Feet Under is Book 4 in A Kenni Lowry Mystery Series. I think this book could be a stand a lone but personally I would read the books in order as it makes it seem like the books roll into one another and you get a better understanding of the characters and the town of Cottonwood.

Celebrity Chef Frank Von Lee comes to town to taste Sheriff Kenni Lowry's, mama's chicken pot pie. He is murdered. When the cause of death is food poisoning Mama becomes the #1 suspect. Kenni knows things are not going to be good be the ghost of Poppa, her grandfather. He shows up when someone has been killed to help with the sleuthing.

What I really loved about this book and author does such a good job with is that as I am reading along I'm right there within the book trying to figure out who is the killer and what was the motive. As an extra bonus there is actually two mysteries going on within this book.

I love the characters is this book and I loved that this book made me think. Everytime I though I had it figured out who was the murderer there was a twist and my mind would go in a different direction. This book had me guessing right till the very end.

This is the type of book that you want to pick right back up and read again.

Does anyone else think there's something that Finn is hiding? I'm intrigued.
