While this isn’t my favorite Morrison that I’ve read, it still has everything that I’ve come to love and expect from her work. Layered, complicated characters with layered, complicated relationships with each other, and absolutely beautiful prose. I loved this exploration of girlhood, friendship, sex and sexuality, and the social pressures that bring us together or pull us apart.

The book is *to me* a commentary on needing the world to give the individual ( in this case a black woman in the 20s-40s) an identity, self, value and worth. Toni Morrison describes Sula as a whimsical instinctual girl who grows into a free woman.
Free in the sense of choosing her own responsibility or in her case choosing none. Nell however, takes on responsibilities that society expected of her and that’s the beginning of their divide.  Due to sulas promiscuity and betrayal, it initially lead me to root for Nell until Toni Morison reveals more of Nell’s own wicked nature. Morrison’s world building around the two women’s relationships even give more insight on who they are and asks the question, who is really judging of “good” and “bad”. This is a really really good friends to enemies story and the ending ughh💔 “All that time, all that time, I thought I was missing Jude.” “We was girls together,..”
