I'm someone who doesnt enjoy YA books but read this bc a coworker asked me to. I will say that I ended up kinda liking it at the very end. I hate the main character and found her annoying and selfish. But really enjoyed the side characters. Especially Memphis and Theda!
As a high fantasy lover, I wasnt crazy about the time period it's based in but the audio book narrator makes the slang really fun. I found myself wishing the book had a darker feel with more heavy reasons for the murdering but I think ya books in general tend to be a lil superficial when it comes to plot.

Let’s begin with the things I liked about this book. I loved the mix between historical fiction and the magical realism. I loved how it was set in the 1920s. The overall plot with Evie using her powers to catch a killer mixed two of my favorite topics; supernatural and mystery. Libba Bray combined both themes very well.

The things I didn’t like were the side stories. The author introduced characters that didn’t really have anything to do with the main plot of the story. I know they are important for a bigger set-up in the sequels, but I ended up not being interested since I was too focused on the main story. Also there is a love triangle. So of course I hate that; especially since it deals with best friends, and those are the worst.

I will say that there is a small rape scene in the story between husband and wife. The scene isn’t too graphic. It depicts the abuse the character went through. So if you are triggered by those topics and you want to read this book, you still can, because the scene is not important to the overall plot. You won’t miss any important details by skipping the scene.

Overall I really enjoyed reading the book and will continue with this series.

it´s too long and I feel bad for  Mabel.
Mabel, Henry, Sam and Memphis could have been cut without much trouble and it would have streamlined everything. It´s clearly just a setup and it should have been more.

The first half was good, but a bit slow. The second half was excellent. It wasn’t too predictable and kept me wondering what could happen next. I wanted more of Sam.
Jericho being a robot was kind of random?? It just didn’t really fit the vibe of the book in my opinion. Jericho and Evie as a couple was also kind of weird but I didn’t hate it.
Mabel reminds me of Penny from Hairspray. I could totally see this book as a TV series!! Bray is a great writer!
