Overall : 4.75 stars of 5

I give this book a 4.75 out of 5. It combines some of favorite themes amazingly. I think it was well written and it was enjoyable to read. I would recommend it to anyone who would love the 1920s and/or the occult. I can’t wait for the next book in the series!

I really really enjoyed this! the beginning was a little hard to get into because of the multiple storylines, but dang i really liked it by the middle of the book. very much plot focused as opposed to romance focused, which is a breath of fresh air. i really liked the vibes of this book & the setting. onto book two!

Five stars for vibes, but it just wasn't fully what I was expecting. I was expecting more of the murder mystery and the occult. It had that sprinkled throughout for sure, and definitely picked up the last hundred or so pages. However, it was slow paced and spent a lot of time on the speakeasy/party aspects. I did enjoy this as it painted a historical picture of NYC at the time, but I do wish the ratios had been reversed. There are also a lot of characters we are following, and sometimes it felt like some of them got left behind a bit, and the group never came together as I was hoping they would. I am looking forward to the rest of the series. I hope going forward the things I found lacking in this one become more prevalent.

I really enjoyed this book! It definitely could have been shorter, because parts of it dragged. I wasn't expecting to actually be creeped out by it, so that was a plus. I'm excited to read the next one!

I loved this book! It was super spooky and creepy and a great read for October. I listened to the audiobook and that really made the experience for me, the narrator did an amazing job. I know a lot of people were irritated by the 1920s lingo in this book, but that is what I loved most. I felt like I had been transported to the 20s, like I was right there with the characters. Can’t wait to jump into the second book!

I found my new obsession.

This book is beyond any words. I cannot say enough good things about it.

First, let's start with the setting. The 1920s? Heck yes! Sign me up! The setting was gorgeous and rich in true culture and life of the 20s. The characters and their own feelings and motives fit perfectly with the setting, and the time period added so much to the story rather than just a mood (which was a huge problem with the last historical set book I read). Everything screamed 1920s. Nothing was too modern. I felt as if I was truly immersed in the past.

Going along with the setting, I am so happy that Libba Bray didn't modernize the characters' inner dialogue. They were truly in the time and had the free spirit and rebellious attitude that was prominent in the 20s. I am also pleased that Bray showed the darker side of history, including the KKK and the eugenics movement, without making it the focal point of the story. It showed that even in a time of change, there was still change for the worst.

The romance in this story was amazing, because it wasn't the whole story! The romance didn't really show itself until the last 50 pages, which I really appreciated. Of course there is school-girl crushes going on throughout, but the romance doesn't show itself until later. I liked this because it made the plot and the characters become their own without becoming tied to another character. (In case that was confusing I'm talking about when you ship characters together more than liking them for themselves).

Evie, man, Evie was spectacular! She was witty, she was full of spunk, and she wasn't afraid to be girly and be a flapper. She was proud of her womanhood, and not once did it deter her from being strong.

I am already screaming for the sequel. Thank the Lord for two-day shipping!
