4 // Beautifully written historical tale of several women essentially forming a sapphic commune in a little island by Paraguay. At times it meandered, but overall ‘twas enthralling. I wish I had written down the quotable lines because there were so many and they were all so precious.

This book was stunning! The writing was beautiful and the characters felt so real and I want to cry just thinking about this beautiful story. One of my all time favorites and one of those lesbian books I’ve been dreaming of for a long time.

An enchanting saga following the lives of 5 women; 5 "cantoras" who sing to other women of forbidden love in a time of fear when anyone can be disappeared for any reason and to be a lover of other women is a crime worthy of death. Together these 5 women are a family that choose each other. A beautiful, spellbinding journey through the little known history of Uruguay.

Fascinating premise of lesbians in Uruguay living in the dictatorship of the late 1970s/early 1980s and how these women "grow up" and their lives progress as their friendship remains. I would have liked this more if the characters were more defined - this may be a function of the translation but I had a hard time separating the women as they all had similar personalities. This book will assume you have some historical understanding of the politics and the zeitgeist.

This wasn't bad, but I just couldn't get into it. I'm not a fan of constant POV changes mid-chapter, but this is something I would possibly pick up again in the future.

This is why I don’t listen to audiobooks…
because it took me 4X as long to get through it and it is such a beautiful, meaningful, heartbreaking book that I now have to go out and buy, because I can’t imagine not reading it again.
