An interesting and often moving account of a man's life in slavery, and his incredible efforts to escape. I am curious to read some of Douglass' other narratives and works, because his story was both fascinating and well-written.

I only read this as I am doing a module on slavery and our essay is based on this book. It really opened my eyes to the life of a slave. The torture they had to live with was just horrendous. I have no idea how somebody could do that to a fellow human just because of the colour of their skin.

This book transcends the Goodreads star-rating system.

This should be required reading at every school in the US, especially given the current state of racism-denial in our society.
