The first book in this series, Irene, was so good, it's undeniable that my expectations after it are high especially since Alex had so much hype. This one disappointed partly because of the hype and partly because the synopsis has given away the whole plot. There are no surprises or plot twists for anyone who usually reads crime novels or watches crime shows. There are descriptive paragraphs of gore and torture, something the author excels at, but storywise--the synopsis has told you everything you need to know. The conclusion of the story does feel like a justice and will probably be seen as a twist.
I liked Camille, the protagonist, in the first book, but more and more, I've realized that he’s really a bland protagonist. His main design in both novels is having one semi-unfounded hunch, that higher ups oppose, that of course ends upcorrect. Armand makes for a more compelling protagonist and is one of the characters that is actually great at the job. The other is Louis.

Minor: Rape and Pedophilia
