I absolutely adored the world building in this book. I enjoyed the look at expectation and duty- the idea of fate with a lack of choice. I loved the two main characters and their interactions. The last 10% of this book was super disappointing. I think this would have been better as a duology with it more fleshed out. To me- it was like: twist, sacrifice, end.

Highly imaginative world and exploration of what having the ability to make choices means, and what believing we don't have choices causes. I might've rated higher if I was more in the mood for this kind of story and not just finishing it before my library loan elapses, and if romance built along the way instead of the classic instant attraction thing driving everything. But I suppose it does have relevance when we learn more about the characters.

This book really intrigued me going into it because I THOUGHT it was going to give Studio Ghibli vibes. While it did that successfully, all of the details and the ideas of the world were all super confusing. They characters didn't really interest me all that much (and it makes sense with the plot twist), but I just didn't really connect with any of them. The last couple of chapters also confused me, since there was not only a 1 year time jump, but a 5 year jump, and then the book just ends. That's the part that made me infuriated.

I enjoyed the beginning but excessive world-building got in the way of the story. I can’t say I particularly found the characters interesting or very likable either. Overall it was very meh and eventually I resented listening too much to finish.
