The ending seemed inevitable and I wasn’t very excited about the characters

Took me at least the first third to get into this ("made a leg", anyone?). I didn't enjoy it as much as when I was pre-pubescent, but there's still good stuff in here.

As a child I had always seen the Redwall books at my library and been heavily intimidated by the sheer size of the books as well as the length of the series, but it was so fun to pick up the series as an adult! The diversity in the different species of anthropomorphic creatures was really nice, but I wasn’t a huge fan of how each species got shoehorned into a certain “accent” (the sparrow one in particular felt a bit…off, perhaps been veering a little toward microaggression…) and I didn’t like how Brian Jacques decided that there would be “good” animals and “bad” animals, especially as a lover of snakes and rats.

The prose and dialogue definitely slump at various points in the plot, to the point where I could tune out and tune back in and pick up the gist of the story despite missing a good chunk of the book.

So overall, while this book was cute and fun, I will not be continuing on with the rest of the series.

Delightful and fun, full of dashing heroism and rather murderous little creatures. No one can keep Constance down!

Not as good as I was lead to believe. This is a very well loved series, but I didn't find it compelling.

I wasn't sure where the author was going with the animals. Are the mice, rats, birds, ect. all people? Sometimes they seem to be as with the religious, abbey dwelling mice. But sometimes they seem much more animal like the adder or the barbaric birds. It's also unclear whether the world is dominated by animals and things are mostly mouse sized, or if the mice are living alongside people. it seems to be the former, but there are enough contra-indicators to make it confusing.

Setting the story in a an abbey is also confusing. The mouse religion seems to be a rough analogue of Christianity, but the only real details about their faith emerge as a sort of hero worship of a departed warrior saint. None of the monks seem particularly concerned with matters of faith. The villains are intent on looting the abbey and the potential wrath of god never comes up as a factor, so what seems like a relevant plot point is mostly undeveloped.

I was hoping for more and am a bit disappointed.
