If heroic mice doesn't sell you on this, I honestly probably couldn't. The story is more middle-grade than young-adult to me, but really enjoyable.

As part of the ongoing series The Collaborators, Alaina finishes her review of Redwall by Brian Jacques before Erica and refrains from doing the "I'm First" dance. Most likely because she only rated Redwall 1.5 stars, and that she's also saving it for later. For the full review - including references to movies of yore, archetypes in storytelling, and the Murtaugh List - follow the link to That's What She Read.

What if "Frog and Toad" met "King Arthur"? Brian Jacques masterfully expands this idea into a vibrant and detailed world; heartwarming scenes of cozy firesides nestle up against moments of vicious and cruel natural selection. Re-reading this as an adult gave me the perspective to see parallels to the great myths and legends of our world, which are woven deeply to entice the reader and evoke powerful imagery. Some particularly prominent examples I found were the aforementioned King Arthur, The Iliad, and David and Goliath. A wonderful read and a great world to explore!

When life gets tough the name of the game for me is comfort reads, usually from my childhood. My grandfather gifted me a copy of Redwall when I was maybe six years old for my birthday. He passed away about a year later. I still have my copy he gave me all those years ago, but the audiobook has to be my favorite way to relive those memories. The full cast recording with the author is such an amazing experience. It brings me back every time I listen to me lugging around my walkman with my checked out library tapes on so many family trips.

Liked it.

It was exactly what it advertised. Adorable. Whimsical. Black-and-white without much depth. But I so enjoyed these rodential adventures, every single side quest Matthias chose to do, the way Constance was an absolute BAMF, the feasts, and all the different creatures. It was simple. It was sweet. It was sometimes shockingly violent.
