This is the book where Hawk and Spenser save Susan. I know a lot of the later books are based on things that happened here, but I really can't remember reading this one. It was not my favorite, but a good book anyway. A lot of exchanges between Spenser and Hawk and that's always good!

A Catskill Eagle by Robert B. Parker
What first interested me into reading mysteries was the Jesse Stone movies on TV with Tom Selleck. This is the same author that wrote the series and I really like the movies.
The stories are very similar. This one is about the PI Spenser who gets a text on his cell from Susan that she wants to get out of there but can't leave. He tracks her down to the west coast and ends up in jail with a cast on his leg where he's hidden his gun.
He escapes along with Hawk and they travel to track down where Susan could be. After Washington state where the lodge is burned down-she had been there to CT where they join a vigilante group of men who are like mercenaries. Although there are killings it's not
glorified nor very detailed as to the gory surroundings.
Places they go, some are familiar to me and some not, love the descriptions as I can picture exactly where they are on the map.

Not one of my favorites in the series. A bit longer than most of the previous books with a pretty much straight ahead thriller type plot which was not to my taste. The banter between Spencer and Hawk kept me reasonably entertained but Susan started to wear on my nerves. Listened to the audio version read by Michael Prichard who gave his usual steady performance.

Many people have bashed this book in the Spenser series for good reason. While the action is good and the plot forgivably forced, the relationship between Spenser and Susan is not so simply overlooked.

I won't ruin plot other than to say that Parker's understanding of abusive relationships is flawed.

I've loved all of these books and I will keep reading on. I thought this one installment in the series, however, was a bit of a "jump the shark" story. The kidnapping escalates into breaking into this not-quite-Bond villain installation and Spenser doing a gig as hitman for the federal government, to clean up a problem they can't solve themselves. I'm pretty sure they don't need a Boston gumshoe to do that kind of work for them. Maybe it's just me.

All the other elements of a Spenser story are there. The wise cracks, the insightfulness, the sensitivity to women and minorities, the interpersonal relationships and the slow but steady character development of favorites like Susan. So, all the stock elements were great - as always. The plot just felt like a bit of a "wtf?" moment for me.

Robert B. Parker delivered another excellent Spenser novel that blends superb action with deeper relationship and social commentary reflective of the times. 4 stars. It is a good thing to see there are 49 books in a series and be happy to know there are 37 more yet to read.

Much as I liked this entry in the Spenser series (and I really did like it, hence the 4-star rating), a quote from Douglas Adams's Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy kept coming back to me with every iteration of Spenser's angst over defending himself/hurting bad people in order to save good people:
"I don’t go around gratuitously shooting people and then bragging about it afterward in seedy space-rangers bars, like some cops I could mention! I go around shooting people gratuitously and then I agonize about it afterward for hours to my girlfriend!”

Susan is the real villain in this book. What a selfish, self absorbed princess. Spencer and hawk kick ass as always.
