Bit of an odd one, just a slice of life dealing with the stress of aging and not being able to conceive. Interesting and solem male perspective

It was... Okay? Or good, maybe?
Honestly I don't know.
I enjoyed reading it. Three small snippets of a man's life. Episodes of the everyday that are both mundane and extraordinary. In that regard it was very much typical of Japanese literature and I liked that aspect. That being said, I also felt like they were a little too normal or a little too "extravagant" or just slightly off one way or another - and that had the effect that this book didn't impact me as much as similar ones have. It likely was the author's intention to give that "off" feeling, building in quite a few elements off surrealism, but it didn't really do it for me this time. I enjoyed reading it but always felt like I was missing something, like I wasn't understanding (or feeling) everything I was supposed to. Maybe that's the case and half the book went over my head, or maybe it just was a silly little book with not a ton hidden meaning/feeling. A mostly enjoyable read in any case.

Small little vignette of a book, its attention to small details always gave it a sense of being unsettling or foreboding, but ultimately it was touching. I liked the way each chapter ended with a distinct line. The title and the cover definitely did not capture the vibe of the book.

The whole book seems to have this ethereal feel to it, like reality and perception aren't quite as you'd expect. It's hyper-focused on minute details, beautifully described, that create a sense of presence at the same time as making everything feel a little strange.

It's like a book of three short stories, but they're chronological and deal with the same characters. A little odd, a little quirky, very wistful and with some emotional heft (I felt as much for the weasels as I did the humans), it's a short but sweet read.

Nicely written, sort of mysterious stories with plots that beat around the bush. I liked The Hole and The Factory better. Definitely reading any more of her work that comes out in English!
