I kept wavering between 2 and 3 stars for this one. It's really more of a 2.5 for me. There were some things I enjoyed but the downsides outweighed them.

Positives:
- absolutely loved the small town setting and depiction of ranching life
- highly amused by the fact that Kate and her siblings were all named after the Best Actor/Actress winner the year they were born. The fact that she was named after Katharine Hepburn made me smile.

Negatives:
- way too many characters and most of them were annoying
- Kate really isn't that great of a detective. Yes, she asks questions but gets everything wrong until the end when confronted with the actual killer.
- Carly - I never understood this character or why Kate was so protective; she was basically a brat
- There's a big reveal that seems important and then absolutely nothing is mentioned about it again. Maybe it's going to be part of the next book.

Kate is a strong woman and in the first chapter of this story she is completely tested. She is called to a home - her husband has been shot and the grandfather of her ward (girl living in her home) has been shot and killed. She can't find her ward, Carly and suspicions are flying.

First, the setting of this book made it for me. The small town where gossip flew from afternoon to night and people are pointing fingers. I love how when things happen in a small town everyone has an opinion and they all think they are experts!

I had read some other reviews of this book and wondered if I was going to like the storyline...so glad I decided to not listen to the reviews and judge for myself. the book was enjoyable and there were some twists and turns when tracking down the killer....I was shocked but probably shouldn't have been because the killer usually turns out to be a person you least suspect.

Now when it comes to the relationship between Ted and Kate - how could everyone in town know he was cheating on her and not say anything to Kate? Of course, from the hints we are given into their lives, it isn't too surprising that he cheated.

As it is with pretty much all small towns, everyone knows everyone else's business and it is hard to keep anything a secret. But that is to Kate's benefit as she tries to figure out who killed Eldon and why Ted is trying to take the blame. Her family is a bit dysfunctional too, but that isn't always a bad thing because despite everything they do stick together.
