This is a hard read, to be frank. I love Carley Fortune and her books are some of my favorites but this one was just difficult for me to enjoy. The characters are complex as frick which is good because Carley built these people and they are the most person-like characters I have ever encountered. They are complex, their problems are complex. But while that is truly impressive, the fact that Carley was able to create these rich characters, it is still hard because their complexity made me mad. Will made me mad, Fern was left for SO long not having the answers and Will just refused to give them. This may be spoilers but I mean they go on and on about how selfless he is, but he isn't. He makes choices for people under assumptions and thinking that he knows best and knows what is right but dude. Back off. Selfless people are also selfish. I don't know. I did not really enjoy this one. It just made me angry. There were some parts that I liked a lot so that is why it is a 3-star for me.

2 stars. I wanted to like this, it had potential, but I was bored the whole time.

i didn't love this one as much as every summer after, but i have such a warm spot in my heart for will. mental health is such a struggle and it was written about in this story gracefully. the ending of this story had me in a puddle.
