I loved this so so much I can’t get enough of it ! It’s definitely my new favorite book and it’s so amazing so wholesome so sad so perfect.
Still one of my all-time favorites!
It captures the horse-rider relationship so deeply and beautifully. It's exhilarating, fierce, sweet, tragic... It's simply fantastic.

Einfach nur wow. Der Schreibstil hat mich sofort in seinen Bann gezogen und auch wenn ich mit den rauen Figuren erst warm werden musste, haben sich die auch ganz fest in mein Herz geschlichen. Ich bin kein Pferdemädchen, aber ich liebe Legenden und Fabelwesen und diese Monsterpferde sind echt der Hammer! Ich bin einfach nur glücklich, dass ich zu dem Buch gegriffen habe.
I couldn’t finish reading The Scorpio Races, nor do I feel that it even deserves more than a few words to be spoken on it. As of so far that was the worst book that I have encountered this year. NOTHING happens in it! Despite being named for the races, the entire book is a set-up to the big event, with the race only happening in the final 30 pages of the story (and I only know this because I went to look at the reviews of it on Goodreads after I abandoned it!) It should not take over 300 pages to reach the meat of the story.
"Rot wie das Meer" ist düster, atmosphärisch, wie die raue See im Norden, ein Herbststurm, der einen mitzieht und aufwühlt. Stiefvater schreibt sehr malerisch, poetisch, mit eigenwilligen Charakteren, die man nicht überall so sieht. Auch hier ist sowohl die Szenerie als auch die Charaktere einzigartig.
Puck Connolly lebt auf Thisby, einer Insel irgendwo oben im Norden. Nach dem Tod ihrer Eltern lebt die Teenagerin gemeinsam mit ihren beiden Brüdern zusammen im Elternhaus und schlägt sich so durch. Sie liebt ihre Stute Dove und das raue Landleben, die See und ihre Heimat. Aber die Umstände meinen es nicht gut, so dass sie das Scorpio-Rennen als letzten Ausweg sieht ...
Sean Kendrick hat bereits seinen Vater an das Scorpio-Rennen verloren. Denn dies ist kein gewöhnliches Pferderennen - im Herbst erheben sich vor Thisby in der See Wasserpferde, die Capall Uisce (ich hoffe mal, dass sie sich so schreiben). Sie sind düster, gewalttätig, aber irgendwie auch wunderschön. Sean hat das Rennen bereits mehrmals gewonnen mit seinem Wasserpferd, aber dieses Jahr ist es für ihn wichtiger denn je ...
Alle Charaktere haben so ihre Eigenarten und Schrullen. Niemand verrät direkt alles, sie sind eher eigenbrödlerisch, so dass man als Leser nur langsam mehr über sie erfährt. Puck steht vor allem ihrem jüngeren Bruder sehr nah, ansonsten sind die meisten anderen Charaktere neben ihr und Sean als POV eher am Rande dabei.
Die Atmosphäre hat mich auf jeden Fall in den Bann gezogen und ich habe auch ein Faible für komplizierte, nicht so 0815 Liebesgeschichten wie hier eine entstand.
Empfehlen würde ich das Buch aber nicht ohne Warnung. Content Notes auf jeden Fall:

I enjoyed this. The only books I can read these days are ones that pull me in enough that I can finish them in a day or two. Since I finished this book, it must have been sufficiently captivating for me to read it none-stop.
The parts I enjoyed were the main characters, although their attraction to one another seemed a little stilted. I also loved the horses, I've always been a horse fan, and still am even though these horses were of the carniverous variety.
My problems with it may have had to do with me reading too fast and missing details. For some reason I pictured the sea horses as huge fearsome creatures, and I kept getting confused when the main character thought she could race her pony against them. I mean when I say I pictured them big, I mean maybe twice the size of a regular horse. I don't really know why that is. Also when the author described the sea horse as red, I pictured it as crimson red. For some reason that just felt fake. But its possible red could me like a chestnut color? But I think I'm just nitpicking.
The real issue is that there was just one race. I went into the book thinking that the race was going to be some kind of marathon or at least a series of races. But it was just one, and it was short. Somehow it made the book feel like it took a long to time to reach that final race.
Otherwise, I liked the book, and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to spend a day reading about killer water horses.

It was decent enough, and I appreciated that she didn't use her usual syrupy and flowery tone. The concept is really original: water-horses? You don't read about that often, so I gave her points for originality.
One problem that I had was placing the setting of this book. Was it the future? Was it the past? I really wanted the setting to be described more because she was introducing a new world. No such luck though.

I loved the book - then about halfway thru - I was obsessed with the storyline! It’s fantasy but not totally in your face - if that makes sense. Pick and Sean are the two main characters but I felt like I got to know even the side characters well during the story! Loved it!!
