I was ready to give up this book when I thought that the author killed off the cat, Puffin. In a way, that was my entire mindset through the reading experience: I cared more about the animals (Dove, Corr, all the other horses) than the human characters. I think this author likes establishing mood far too much, often sacrificing plot & pacing. I'm so glad this is a standalone. I had to force myself to finish a book, and that's rarely a good thing.
After hearing that this book is a lovely fall read, I was excited to pick it up this autumn. I was fully prepared to enjoy it.
HOWEVER.
I DNF'd at chapter 10 because I LITERALLY DO NOT CARE ANYMORE.
The boring characters and awkward interactions aside, I was just SO confused. Can't bring myself to invest anymore of my time in this book.

Wow!!!
I loved this book. There was a lot of action and family issues that needed to be discussed, but it was very well rounded. The main characters were very likeable and the entire story was unique from other books I have read.
A beautiful and intoxicating tale of love and loyalty, The Scorpio races explores and ancient myth- Water Horses. The Tale is based around the myth, but Maggie Stiefvater successfully adds her own ideas to the mix, creating this absolutely stunning and amazing tale.
Gah. This was so good. Just the legend/myth/YA love story that I needed.

2.5 stars ⭐️
I feel like I am the unpopular opinion on this, because I was just kind of meh to the whole thing.

It wasn't a bad book. I wasn't invested in the story. I think it had a great premise and there were elements of the book that I liked and Maggie Steifvater is such a talented writer. The writing was beautiful. The bad ass water horses were cool. Yet, something just didn't click for me. I can see that this is a good book, just not the book for me. Hence the rounded up three star rating.
I was not invested in the MCs. I didn't find anything about them likable. I didn't find the romance element in here enjoyable, I was blindsided by it because I didn't feel like there was any romantic tension at all. I would have much rather have had a story focusing on just one of the characters, from one of their perspectives. I think there was too little time to like either of them because we jumped from perspective to perspective. Since I wasn't invested in the characters I didn't care about their story.

I did like a few things though. I liked the setting. I loved how the island felt alive. One character I loved was Finn, he was such a sweetie. I liked the sense of community from the island. I loved the concept of the Scorpio Races, thus I was sad that shit didn't go down till the last little bit of the book. Lastly I loved the capaill uisce, I will literally never look at a horse the same way.
In the end the pacing was all wrong to me. I was bored a good 90% of the time and Puck and Sean are super forgettable...
I would recommend this only if you want to read everything by Maggie Stiefvater and are a completionist.
