I loved this book. Definitely going on my re-read list. In fact, I almost started the audiobook over as soon as I finished it.

What made me like it so much? It just felt more ... genuine ... than many stories. The main female character was tough and sassy without being one-dimensionally kick-butt. She made tough decisions, but not without doubt. She did hard things, but not without fear. She was independent, but not without vulnerability. She provided for her family, but not without needing help herself.

The main male character was on the quiet and brooding side, but the author didn't take him into the "bad boy love-interest" trope. He too felt very real. Reserved and slightly reclusive, but also responsible and capable and willing to do the right thing even for people who didn't deserve it.

While there was a bit of a romantic subplot, most of the story was spent developing a quiet friendship and trust, which made the hint at romance after the end of the book even sweeter.

The stakes of the story felt realistic. And the sacrifices made to achieve the end goal were more than superficial.

CONTENT: There was some crude language and innuendoed joking.

A dark mythology set in relatively modern times, I enjoyed this story. It took a bit to get my bearings in this realistic fantasy world; it would have been helpful to have a key term's pronunciation established in a preface - (singular) capall uisce: CAPple ISHka (plural) capaill uisce: COPple OOSHka. That aside, an intriguing story that I didn't want to put down. Definitely looking at horses differently now.
