oh, i enjoyed this one. the plot is a little lightweight, but i did like the characterizations and i have no problem with the meandering small-town-sketch-i-take-forever-to-get-to-the-races pace; i thought it worked well for the novel (as it has for other novels; jonathan strange and mr norrell come to mind here).

also, when it comes down to it, i grew up on maeve binchy novels and this reads pretty much exactly like a maeve binchy novel with er, more blood and fewer mid life crises. i hope nobody sees that as an insult, because this was a lovely book and the imagery lingered. it does take a while to warm up to, though; i thought the first few chapters a bit overwrought and the povs were written similarly enough that i always had to check at the beginning of the chapter if it was puck or sean talking.

I'd heard of Maggie before, even heard she was good.

I should have paid more attention when I was told.

This is the first book of hers I've read, and it's going straight to my favorites shelf. It's a fantastic story, with fantasy elements spun perfectly into what could easily be a real setting, and I couldn't read it fast enough. I can't wait to get into her other books.

BEST. BOOK. EVER!! I AM IN LOVE WITH HORSES!

Better than expected. This was not your typical girl meets boy and helps her win the race. It was far more complicated. The characters were very different than what I expected. At first, I didn't like Sean since he was just so brooding antisocial. But, I realized that the best part wasn't the actual race but the relationship that both Puck and Sean had with their horses, Dove and Cor.

I've got to say, Maggie's worldbuilding was on point with this book. Her mystical writing style was in full-force and it worked really well with this book.
I sometimes forgot the names of certain characters but I felt this story was appropriately complex for the length of the book, and I enjoyed the story overall. The book was a bit slow, and I thought the actual race scene would be longer (I did really enjoy the race scene though), but, while many would not feel the same, I did enjoy the slower parts just wandering around the quirky village for the most part.
