I read this book in high school and was excited to read it again! It was a little less thrilling the second time. I give it plenty of grace simply because I love horses… and the horse-centric parts certainly live up to my expectations. The fantasy and intrigue surrounding the water horses is definitely what kept me reading. I wish that the romance was a little more fleshed out, I liked Sean and Puck as a pair and thought they were compatible and sweet together, however the build up was very very slow and didn’t lead to much in the romance department. The side characters were also a little uninteresting to me, for whatever reason they just blended together. But I do always enjoy Maggie’s writing style, though I wonder if I’m getting a little too old for it. Regardless, it was an enjoyable read and makes me think of what it would be like to have the experience of taming a Thisby water horse.
4.5 stars. Read this one on the recommendation of my teen and didn’t expect to love it so much.

Maggie Stiefvater had done it again. Her works are all becoming my favorites, my most recommended and dear to my heart. The Scorpio Races being one of them.

It wasn’t very interesting, and was confusing at times.
I will eventually finish it, but I wanted to wait and read something else for now.

I loved how original the storyline was. It felt a little slow at the beginning, during the set up of the storyline, but it picked up closer to the middle. I LOVED the ending though! Very touching!
And once again Maggie Stiefvater has disappointed me. I'm not sure what just happened. For the whole book I'm waiting for the Scorpio Races because that's what this book is about but NOPE!
The Scorpio Races didn't even take place until the last 50 pages! It dragged on and on and I was just waiting for some action. But... no. Basically, the other 350 pages were irrelevant. The only thing that mattered in those pages was the occasional training session and the background knowledge.
You know, I still barely know what Sean looks like. I got a better description of his horse.
I don't recommend this book.

“In the middle of all this, as Sean slips out of his jacket, he looks over his shoulder at me and he smiles at me, just a glancing, faint thing before he turns back to Tommy. I'm quite happy for that smile, because Dad told me once you should be grateful for the gifts that are the rarest.”

Opinion: Many people told me to be prepared for a disappointing story. But what I found was what I expected from Maggie, great characters, a deeply emotive, very beautiful background story for both the main characters, and an intriguing, entrancing and magical setting.

As you might already know, I read, and loved, The Raven Cycle series by the same author. Maggie's writing is very similar in both works, even though the plot and the characters are nothing alike. But both are slow-paced, centered in family bonds and friendship, deal with some social prejudices, and have just a tiny bit of love in the right places.
✎
This isn't exactly a fantasy novel, or at least not a classic one, even though the island has its magic. It's a character driven story, and despite having a mythical creature in it, the author gave more importance to the relationship between horses and humans, the bond that binds Sean to Corr and Puck to Dove.

So, was it perfect? Probably not. But I loved it anyway 🐎💙
