I listened to this audiobook and enjoyed every minute of it. It was read by Norm with a few chapters read by his “ghost writer.” This covers his early life in Canada, his struggle with a gambling addiction, & his assistant’s struggle with alcoholism. Norm discusses his years on the road as a stand up comic, his interview with SNL’s Loren Michaels (one of my favorite chapters!), his stint on SNL doing Weekend Update, not to mention his beautiful work granting an ill child’s wish to visit the SNL set. Ugh. I could go on and on but you really should just run out and get this book/audiobook. You will laugh and cry and never be the same!! This truly stands with some of the best autobiographies ever written. You are missed Norm!!!
3.5 stars.
Alright. So that was interesting! Not at all what I expected -- but maybe that's a good thing? Based on a True Story is definitely a fictional novel with sprinkles of memoire roped in. Tiny sprinkles.
If you enjoy Norm's humor, it will be entertaining. I do enjoy his humor, and even at the beginning the memories of his persona definitely made me feel sad he is now gone.
Norm's "memoire" really makes a statement about how we boil down lives into words - and how we expect people in certain positions and roles to behave.

Norm Macdonald is hilarious. I listened to this as an audiobook which made it even better. Great read if you are a fan of Norm's delivery (watch a few clips on youtube if you are unsure).
I listened to the audiobook version, and there were times I had to pause because I was laughing so hard. Norm's humor isn't for everyone, but I think he's hysterical.
There are a few moments and sections of this book that I didn't think worked as well as the others, but overall it was pretty great.

Hate to say it but some things just don't transfer to the written word and sadly Norm Macdonald's wry humor is one of them. Admirable effrot though.
Good Lord
This book may be one of the funniest things I've ever read. I say "thing" because it's not a memoir at all even though parts seem like they may be true, but who knows? It's all very outlandish and funny and dark though.
