3.5 - So nice to read some gay Melbourne shit. Imagine monkey grip, but gayer and without any heroin.

This was a solid 3/5 and was quite a good read. The book is fast paced and feels like it constantly has a solid direction. Some of the characters suffer from feeling under developed, but the plot and protagonist are so endearing that the book still drags you in. The descriptions of Melbourne and the characterisation of Dan are it’s strongest attributes.

I don't usually like to read two novels by the same author so closely together - variety is the spice of life as they say. But, I was speaking with someone who sang high praise for The Adversary by Ronnie Scott, and as such, it was catapulted to the top of my TBR.

The story follows a gay man in his 20s, navigating share-houses, hook-ups and friendships, all whilst creating a vivid image of Melbourne.

I feel that if you are a gay man living in Melbourne you will really enjoy this book due to the realism of its descriptions, both in geography and society. But, that's not to say this is solely a piece of work for gay men. It is a complicated character, friendship and relationship study. It's one of those books that makes me both glad that I have moved away from sharehouses, but also makes me miss the moments that that type of environment creates.

I will concede that I was not the biggest fan of the ending, it felt very convenient and I'm not sure that it was necessary. However, don't shy away from this. It can be read in a few hours, it's straightforward, and I think it is an accurate portrayal of living in your twenties.

A sticky Australian summer novel set in Melbourne. Brunswick vintage shops and Fitzroy pool. A little confusing in its cast of characters, it goes around in unloveable circles but maybe that’s the charm. Warm, wet and stifling.
