it’s an easy read, but has repetitive writing. also felt like it romanticizes grooming a bit. i feel like the idea was good but the execution could use polish.

This was a pick for a book club this month, and at first I wasn't really sure about it. I am not a dancer and don't really read many things about Russia. Nothing against either thing, but they just don't really interest me.

Well I had a lot of time on my hands and started reading. I couldn't put this book down. It is a wonderful story. It starts with a granddaughter talking about how great her grandmother was to her. She also tells the things that she knows about her life, but wonders what she doesn't know. Unfortunately, her grandmother passes away before she ever asks her the burning questions she has. The granddaughter did ask if the grandmother loved her husband. She said that she was very fond of him. Well after the prologue, I was feeling a bit bored. Near the end of the prologue, my interest was peaked a little. The granddaughter received a package from the nursing home. There were toe shoes and letters all written in Russian.

Then the story starts about a young girl who's father takes her to live at the ballet in St. Petersburg Russia. He has three sons, but is not sure how to raise a girl. He is also away a lot due to his job. Danina fell in love with the ballet and gave it EVERYTHING she had. Then she fell ill with influenza and the Imperial family sent their doctor, Nikolai Obrajensky. After spending a lot of time together, they fell in love.

The books tells of a tragic young ballerina who fell in love with a married man. Some parts were predictable as with any book, but there were good twists and turns. By the end of the book, I was hooked and couldn't wait to see if they got to spend happily ever after together. I guess you will have to read the book to find out more!!!

Granny Dan by dnaielle Steel
This book is about the Russian ballerina who when she died at 90 after having been in a nursing home.
They had sent to her a box of the rest of her things=ballet shoes and other mementos. letters in Russian that she wasn't sure she'd have translated or kept as they were.
The story of Granny Dan starts out being born and at the age of 5 her mother died. She was sent to a ballet school which she would live and travel throughout the country when she was 14. A full member of the troupe.
Love how this story goes and we learn all about her as things change over time.
Very strong character to have accomplished what she did.
Love this story as it's short and to the point and love the places I was able to travel to and the exquisite descriptions of the dancing life and attire.

Honestly excited for my first Steele - set in late imperial Russia!?! However, the writing was SO repetitive- like every 7th sentence was the same as the one before, it felt like a rough draft. There’s far better out there (The Last Days of the Romanov Dancers). Won’t rule out Steele yet, but this was a huge let down (especially after reading reviews once I had decided to DNF).
