A lucid introduction to a range of “theories” that have influenced literary studies since the 1960s and 70s. However, the work has the shortcoming of the discipline itself, which is to be too preoccupied with politically-engaged analysis, problematisation, and reading of absences (as opposed to the text itself). I would have liked to hear more about Russian Formalism, New Criticism, and other, earlier modes of literary analysis as a counterpoint to these preoccupations, rather than having them largely relegated to the appendix.

Didn’t read this for class, in fact, I actually picked it up for a few dollars at a savers looking for a brief description of postmodernism (which it didn’t have). What it did have was a pretty interesting introduction to literary theory that, although I was mostly acquainted with the different theories, brought a lot of interesting new information and ways of thinking.

If you looking to get into theory, I’d suggest this although just know that if you think this is confusing, it just gets worse.
